The need for good English is important – not just for the GCSE, but for everyday life.
Perhaps your son or daughter is working just short of their target, or perhaps they are capable of achieving a much higher grade than the target set by their school.
As a parent paying for private tuition, you will want to know that you are getting value for money.
I have worked with a range of pupils who have varying degrees of ability, helping many reach their potential. For some, this means exceeding the targets set for them by their schools. I am familiar with the formats and expectations of all the major exam boards and, having marked exam papers in the past, am familiar with the skills required for the best grades.
The GCSE and IGCSE for English Language focuses on pupils’ abilities to comprehend texts – fiction and non-fiction – and to analyse them for how and why writers employ specific language and structural techniques to create particular effects. These techniques can then be used by pupils to enhance their own writing.
For GCSE and IGCSE English Literature, pupils will study a number of texts, including a nineteenth century novel, a Shakespeare play, a post-20th century novel or play and an anthology of poems. They will learn how to analyse the main themes, characters and contexts of those texts, as well as how and why writers convey their messages with great effect.
These skills can be quite challenging, even for pupils who generally enjoy reading and writing. One of the main challenges is the expectation to perform under timed conditions, without the use of the technology they employ in their daily lives.
For many IGCSE pupils, there is still the opportunity to undertake coursework elements for the exam. This has its own challenges but is an area where I can provide a lot of guidance.
I can help pupils develop the skills they need to tackle all these expectations and to feel more confident as they progress.
Every lesson is tailored exactly to each pupil's needs. As well as the time taken for each one-hour lesson, I spend time preparing, assessing and giving feedback.
From £50.00 for each lesson.
